It’s hard to pinpoint an exact starting point for this site — a moment in time when it transitioned from unbeing into being.
Maybe it began in August 2012, when I coalesced a few different web things onto Squarespace, and started pointing sidoneill.com at it. Or perhaps it was May 26th, 2013, when I registered the crateofpenguins.com domain (and wrote about it).
You can trace the antedecents of this site all the way back, through multiple properties and locations, to a domain called cleverchip.com, which was my first foray onto the World Wide Web, at the age of 16 (2001-ish). It’s no longer around, which means that, tragically, the world will never again see its main attraction: a pointless Flash cartoon of a “clever chip”, prancing jerkily across the screen.
Maybe it goes back even further than that, to when my Primary 7 teacher read a story of mine to the whole class, and I first discovered the mingled joy and anguish of . Thing is, it’s been a long journey.
Somewhat frustratingly, over time, this site has become a zero-sum game of talent vs time. That is, as writing becomes more natural and easy and enjoyable, I have less and less time to devote to doing it. The only way to change that is to make what I’m doing here a little more sustainable.
There’s two ways to do that: get a lot more page views, or find an alternative way for people to support the site. I vastly prefer the latter, because it lets me publish one or two higher quality pieces a week, rather than five linkbait dribbles a day. (Not that I’d ever do the latter, of course.)
So — I’m not quitting my job any time soon, or trying to make a million bucks overnight. But since more than a few people have asked at various points whether they can make a donation or support my writing in some way, I decided it was eventually time to set up something to allow that.
There are three ways that you can support this site, if the seed of generosity blossoms gently within your bosom. They can all be found on the Support page. They include one-time donations and Amazon affiliate links1.
The new thing, however, is the ability to become a patron of the site. Using a service called Patreon, you can pledge as little or as much as you like per month. More information about this can be found on my Patreon page. If you’d like to support an independent creator with a buck or two a month, this is how to do it!
Some people have already become patrons of the site, really amazing me with their generosity. I’m very thankful to them.
I’m thankful to you, too, whether you decide to become a patron or not. Over time this site’s audience has grown to a size that staggers me when I think about it (though they might seem tiny to the big guys). The fact that you’re gracious enough to cast your eyeballs over my arranged pixels means an awful lot.
If you want to buy something on online, if you start your shopping from the link on the support page, I’ll get a little kickback from Amazon. ↩
